The Legacy Mummy

Twenty years of patches; nobody dares unwrap it

Entombed in the basement data centre since before most of the team were hired, it still runs everything and accepts no visitors. Every few years someone approaches with a bright new roadmap, and every few years the curse wins.

Symptoms

  • Decades-old warehouse, mainframe or ETL tool
  • Thousands of undocumented stored procedures
  • High run and licence costs
  • Migration plans that never start
  • Blocks cloud and AI ambitions

Weakness

Unwrap it a layer at a time: map the dependencies, then migrate incrementally with automated code conversion and reconciliation testing instead of one big-bang resurrection.

Overheard in the corridor

  • “We can't switch it off; everything depends on it.”
  • “The migration is planned for next year. Again.”
  • “Nobody knows what happens if we change that job.”
  • “The vendor ended support years ago.”
